IFA 2011 – BERLIN. Last year it was 3D television; but this year the trend is definitely the rise in connected TVs. All brands are showing their hybrid sets, while German and French broadcasters are now rapidly implementing HbbTV services.
According to Jürgen Boyny, global business unit director for consumer electronics at GfK, 9.4 million TV sets have been sold in Germany this year. In July 2011 some 50% of those sold were internet compatible and during the same month their share of turnover was 66%.
Since coming onto the market a total of four million smart TV sets have been sold in Germany, so that currently around 10% of households are equipped with them. Step by step the internet was taking over other areas, said Boyny, and internet TVs would gradually become the norm. He spoke at a meeting with the press of Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektroindustrie in Berlin.
